- MINO WARE CERAMICS- Mino ware (Mino-yaki) is produced in Mino Province in Gifu prefecture in central Japan. The history of Mino-yaki started during the 7th century and with the introduction of mass production, it became widely available in the 1800s and Mino-yaki accounts for more than 60% of all the ceramics produced in Japan today. An interesting feature about Mino-yaki is that it has not maintained a single style but has more than 15 styles, including Oribe and Shino, and each has its own color, design, and texture.
- SETO WARE CERAMICS- Seto ware (Seto-yaki) is a porcelain crafted in the Seto area in Aichi prefecture and is Japan's pioneer in porcelain mass-production with a history of 1,000 years. Seto ware is so well known as pottery that it is called "Setomono" as a synonym for pottery in Japan. The clay from Seto is known for its low iron content, making it possible to produce a white finish when baked, and thus suited for various glaze colors. The industry has grown and new pottery like tiles, insulators, and architectural ceramics, is produced now.
- CRACKLE GLAZE YUNOMI- The cracking that appears on the surface of glazed ceramics is called Kannyu and arises from the differing rates of expansion and contraction between the clay body and the glaze. While originally perceived as a flaw in porcelain making, crackle has been spread nationwide and evolved. It is now regarded as a technique widely appreciated for adding uniqueness and imperfect beauty to ceramic works.
- HOW TO SERVE TEA- A Japanese teapot is called Kyusu and it is used for brewing green tea. The clay of the teapot keeps the heat steady, ensuring a unique flavor and aroma of the tea. To enjoy the true taste of the tea, it is critical to wait for 1-2 minutes for infusion before serving.
